Prayagraj: Four sadhus were thrashed by a mob at Kodar village under the limits of Manjhanpur police station of Kaushambi district on Wednesday on suspicion of being child-lifters. A video of the mob beating the sadhus has gone viral on social media.
Inspector (Manjhanpur) Vinod Kumar Singh told TOI that a group of four sadhus was travelling to Chitrakoot from Fatehpur district. They, however, lost the way while picking up a shorter route for Chitrakoot and moved towards Kodar village.
“Before the sadhus could find out the exact route, a group of locals surrounded them over child-lifting rumours and beat them mercilessly. Upon being alerted, a team of Manjhanpur police arrived at the spot and rescued the sadhus. The police also quizzed the sadhus at length,” he added.
The Inspector claimed that police would lodge an FIR against the persons involved in thrashing the sadhus. “We are making efforts to ascertain the identities of the persons involved in the incident through video footage,” he said.
Before this case, a group of locals had thrashed a mentally challenged woman at Myohar village under the limits of Karari police station of Kaushambi late Tuesday night. When the police intervened, a group of villagers also pelted stones on the police jeep. However, the police managed to rescue the woman amidst protest from the villagers.
Additional SP (Kaushambi) Samar Bahadur said efforts were being made to establish the identity of the persons involved in the incident in which two policemen were injured in stone pelting.
The police forces of Kaushambi and Pratapgarh were running from pillar to post to check child-lifting rumours. The Pratapgarh police has appealed to the citizens to inform the local police if they have doubts on a man or woman over the issue. They have also appealed to the citizens not to believe rumours.
