Actor Vikrant Massey recently opened up about the Justice Hema Committee report and said that serious offences like rape deserve capital punishment. He said that a woman’s safety is not just restricted to a film set and added that he feels ashamed that he is more secure than the women around him.
“I think I would just not narrow it down to a film set. Without discrediting what happened down south in the Malayalam film industry, without discrediting the Hema Committee… but I think I would not want to narrow it down to just what has happened down there. There are equally important issues that need to be looked into,” he told The Hindu.
He added, “As a man, I feel ashamed when I say that I am far more secure than the opposite sex. Unfortunately, they are not as safe as I am and I think it’s about time that all of us collectively come together, and look at the rot within first to begin with because the change begins with you.”
Vikrant also argued for capital punishment and said, “Depending on the case, capital punishment could be granted. In the case of minors, it definitely should.” “But when I say this, a lot of us need to look at the rot within,” he added. “In the case of minors, I think capital punishment should be given and it should be fast-tracked,” he said. However, Vikrant also noted that Human Rights advocates and other necessary perspectives are also needed in this regard.
