He also felt that retelling Baiju Bawra’s story would bring a new perspective. He further added, “I am sure that if Sanjay Leela Bhansali is making a film he will not take it from my grandfather’s work. He is going to put his opinion on it. He will have his own story which he will have researched. ” But Vikram was certain that SLB was the right person to take up the project. He further added, “Baiju Bawra is a historical figure and it belongs to no one. He is equal to everyone and if anyone is making Baiju Bawra, the director who deserves to make it the most is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He An excellent director. He has proved himself time and again. If anyone can give it the scale and musical ethos with the required magic, it has to be SLB.”
Stories of historical figures attract attention from many sources and a lot can happen in the process of acquiring rights for remakes etc. Vikram said, “I really don’t know if anyone has tried making Baiju Bawra before. I believe my grandfather’s Baiju Bawra script included a lot of his own writing, but I think the rights to the 1952 film are with Evergreen Pictures Bombay. Maybe Sanjay Leela Bhansali has bought the rights.
Finally on the subject of casting and producing the film on a musical maestro, Vikram said, “The one who will be cast to play Baiju will make the film. Equally important would be who does the music. You again need a musician like Naushad, he is no more. There will be many challenges. I don’t think anyone remembers the old Baiju Bawra. Truth be told, it was 1952 and we are in 2022, 70 years have passed, generations are gone.”
