Veteran spinner R Ashwin achieves huge millstone in first county match for Surrey

Indian cricket team’s senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made his debut for Surrey in the County Championship. Ashwin achieved a big milestone in this match. Playing for Surrey in the County Championship, Ashwin set a special record against Somerset at The Oval on Sunday.

The veteran spinner became the first spinner in the last 11 years to bowl the first over in an English county match. Earlier in the year 2010, Jeetan Patel did this. To prepare for the upcoming Test series against England, Ashwin decided to play in the County Championship.

Somerset captain James Hildreth won the toss and elected to bat. After this, Surrey captain and England opener Rory Burns asked Ashwin to bowl the first over. Burns bowled Ashwin from both ends and the spinner conceded just two runs in his first over.

The spinner took a wicket on the first day by bowling 24 overs till tea break. The batsmen had trouble scoring runs on Ashwin’s precise line-length.

Ashwin conceded 58 runs in 24 overs with five maidens in the first two sessions and found the breakthrough in the 40th over as Tom Lamonby (42) opened the second session of the day.

Before Surrey, Ashwin has played for Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire. He will then join the Indian team for a practice session to prepare for the Test series against England. The first Test match of the five-match Test series between India and England will begin on August 4.
