Veteran music composer Anandji’s daughter Rita Valambia passes away

According to media reports, veteran musician Anandji’s daughter Rita Valambia passed away on 7 October. Rita died of a heart attack. She was in her early 60s. “Luckily both her parents were with Ritaji when the end came. She was in a lot of physical pain for some time,” composer Lalit Pandit told journalist Subhash K Jha.

There is also a son of Anandji Veer Shah, half of Kalyanji-Anandji. His dear brother and music partner Kalyanji passed away in August 2000. Anandji, who has composed music for over 250 films with Kalyanji, has introduced talents like Manohar Udhas, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Sadhna Sargam, Sapna Mukherjee and many more. Over four decades, the composer duo worked with new-age filmmakers including Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra, Manoj Kumar, Subhash Ghai, Feroz Khan and Chandra Barot. Kalyanji-Anandji produced the National Film Award winning tunes of Saraswatichandra (1968) as well as the incredible music of the iconic film Don (1978).

Anandji was born on March 2, 1933, to Virji Shah. His father was a Kutchi entrepreneur who moved to Bombay to start a grocery business (provision store). Babla and Kanchan are his younger brothers and sister-in-law. One of his four grandmothers was a famous folk musician. He spent most of his childhood in the Marathi and Gujarati communities of Girgaum (a district of Bombay).

Anandji is also the recipient of the civilian honor of Padma Shri (1992). Earlier this year, Anandji along with his wife Shanta Ben Shah made an appearance on the singing reality show Indian Idol 12.
