BCCI President of Selectors Chetan Sharma says the team management sees KL Rahul as someone who can lead India full time in future after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. As part of his leadership’s succession plan, he has appointed Rahul as the captain for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, a refusal by Rohit Sharma as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
This will be the first time that Rahul will lead India in any format. However, he has a rich captaincy experience to lead Punjab Kings in the IPL.

During a media interaction on Saturday, Chetan said that the selectors are preparing Rahul for the future as captain.
“Yeah definitely. Right now we are looking at KL Rahul. He is a player of three formats and he has got good captaincy experience. Most importantly he proved his leadership quality, that’s what all selectors think As Rohit is not fit, we thought KL will be the best one who can handle this side. So we have good faith in KL and we are grooming him.”

While they are building a team for the future, the first target for the selectors is the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be played in Australia in the second half of 2022.
There is concern about Rohit’s fitness and after the end of the 2023 ODI World Cup, the Indian team may have to prepare for another change in captaincy. However, as a selector, Chetan said that his only concern is to prepare the team for the World Cup.
“I know but if you talk about five selectors, we are thinking of T20 World Cup. We are definitely preparing for ’23 World Cup’ but our first target is this year. It’s the T20 World Cup. We can’t speculate about who will be fit or not, it’s not our place to do that,” Chetan said.
“No one wants to be unfit. We can’t think beyond ’23’ for now. Obviously we are grooming KL Rahul. We brought in Bumrah (as vice-captain) because he is an experienced man, He can come and learn. He is the vice-captain because our main captain is not fit. But people are going to learn and it will be good for Indian cricket.”
