Veg It Out: Israeli vegan food made easier – but what about taste?

Food subscription services have exploded in recent years, with more and more options available, all focusing on different and specialty options.

However, those with dietary restrictions such as vegetarians or vegans have often been left on the sidelines with minimal options. That is, until Veg It Out stepped onto the scene in 2019 offering healthy, balanced vegetarian foodShowing that eating healthy doesn’t have to be complicated.

Waze It Out founder Bella Haskell came to Israel for seminary and stayed for national service before making Israel her permanent home.

The idea for a vegan subscription service came to him while traveling in China, where he said “he saw firsthand what the Western diet of highly processed foods, added sugar and lack of vegetables was doing to people’s health.”

She states that this experience led her to decide to make it her mission “not to let people’s tiredness from life get in the way of eating really good food that is wonderful for their bodies.”

Fast forward a few years, and Veg It Out offers customers the option of receiving three, six or nine meals a week, which will then be delivered each Monday morning in a freezer bag, ready for the customer to eat. No more than two or three minutes in the microwave without cooking.

While the menu changes on a weekly basis, each meal guarantees a balance of vegetables, proteins, and grains.

Excited about the prospect, I set out to sample five of the meals, ready to discover the latest offerings available. Israel’s ever-growing vegetarian scene,

The first thing I noticed was a clear list of ingredients printed on the top of each meal, along with an easy-to-see kashrut label and a sign indicating that the ingredients were Vegan and Gluten Free,

As a vegetarian and vegan with a celiac partner, it can often be difficult to find food to suit our various dietary needs, so the clear label was appreciated and further highlights the way Veg It Out caters to customers’ needs makes it central.

1. Tofu Sesame Bowl

The first bowl I sampled came with heaps of beetroot and carrots, as well as a sweet chili sauce to pour over the meal.

While the tofu was well-seasoned and the sweet chili sauce was a nice addition, the carrot and beetroot overwhelmed the flavors, making the bowl a one-note hit. Additionally, the food felt like it lacked acidity, something that perhaps could have been rectified with a splash of lemon or vinegar.

Overall, I would rate this bowl 6/10, as the beetroot was overwhelming in its quantity and flavour.

2. Pesto Bowl

Moving on to the Pesto Bowl, with sun-dried tomatoes, haricot beans, sweet potatoes and zucchini on a bed of rice noodles, topped with pesto sauce, the flavors immediately felt more balanced.

The sauce was the star of the show—creamy and delicious; And the colors of the vegetables show up differently than the green, making for a pleasurable eating experience for all the senses.

The beans themselves were a bit overcooked, and the sun-dried tomatoes got a bit lost among the other flavors, as there was less of it than other vegetables. Overall though, I would rate it 8.5/10. It was a satisfying meal and one that I would be happy to eat again.

3. Greek Bowl

Made of bell peppers, zucchini, kalamata olives, red onions, and tofu with an olive oil dressing, this bowl had strong, punchy flavors that melded together beautifully, creating a zingy and delicious Greek salad-inspired meal.

The addition of quinoa and tofu to the salad made this a balanced meal, and for me personally, the best of that week’s selections. I would rate it 9/10 and would happily eat it again.

4. Curried Lentils and Sweet Potato Bowl

The meal that seemed most intriguing when I opened the Veg It Out freezer bag was the Curried Lentil and Sweet Potato Bowl, which consisted of a puree of curried lentils, sweet potatoes and red cabbage on a bed of brown rice.

While the food tasted good, the curry was decidedly mild, and the dal was probably inspired more by curry than actual curry.

Overall the flavors were weak and definitely undercooked, with the red cabbage having no spice added to it.

Overall, I would rate this bowl a 7/10, as some stronger spice and a splash of acidity could have greatly improved the overall impression.

5. Butternut Squash Bowl

After a meal of five, this bowl consisted of butternut squash, red onion, green lentils, quinoa, and a tahini sauce.

I found the combo to be lacking in flavor, relying on the tahini sauce to pack a punch, which while it was delicious, it failed to do so. Vegetables that are short in season tend to overwhelm the tahini, weakening rather than enhancing its flavor.

The flavor was mild in the bowl, and very little of everything else. For me, this bowl was the most disappointing, and I’ll rate it a 5/10.
