VB Students Squat Before VC’s Car, Stop Him from Reaching Office

Several students of Visva-Bharati sat on the road near his residence on Tuesday and prevented its Vice-Chancellor Professor Bidyut Chakraborty from going to his office.

The agitating students have locked the VC of the Central University in his quarters for a fortnight.

A university spokesperson said that on Tuesday, when the vice-chancellor was about to leave for his office in the evening from his official residence inside the Shantiniketan campus, a girl student ran and sat in front of his car.

He said several other students camping outside the gate ran towards his car and some of them sat down on the ground.

The security guards tried to persuade him to leave and Chakraborty went back to his residence.

The spokesman said that after this it has been decided that for the time being the Vice-Chancellor will discharge his responsibilities from his residence.

The spokesman said Chakraborty has been confined to his residence since November 24 as around 15 students are camping outside his gate in support of their demands.

SFI Vishwabharati unit leader Somnath So said the students are demanding the VC’s immediate intervention in the allotment of hostel rooms for outstation students, an issue that has remained unresolved since the pandemic.

They are also seeking his intervention to facilitate the evaluation of thesis papers among others.

Meanwhile, the girl student who was sitting next to Chakraborty’s car claimed that she was manhandled by the security personnel. “I was assaulted despite being a woman and a university researcher”.

On 23 November, Chakraborty had a heated argument with the agitating students in his office and told reporters present there that he had been assaulted, but that he would not succumb to any pressure.

After this, Chakraborty left for his official residence with the help of security guards between 23 and 24 November.

Students, including PhD scholars, had accused him of arbitrariness and alleged that he misbehaved with them.
