Navi Mumbai: Vigilant citizens and activists have informed Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (Navi Mumbai).NMMC) and also to the local police about the dangerous theft of metal covers of storm water drains from different parts of Vashi node. Activists have indicated that the drain caps stolen by unknown criminals are probably sold as scrap metal.
former vashi corporator Vaibhav Gaikwadi Told TOI, “It is shocking and sad that at least ten metal drain covers have been stolen from various places in Sectors 1 to 8 and near Vashi railway station premises. I have informed NMMC and also from police. Urged to investigate as it is a loss of public property.
Gaikwad said that at some places, gaping holes can be seen along the road, where drain caps were stolen, which could lead to accidents.
Another local worker, Rohit Malhotra, alleged, “I think that either the contractor inside the municipal body or the municipal contractor must have committed this offense to get fresh orders worth lakhs to fix the stolen drain cover. Anyway, the municipal authorities have to do it. A proper investigation should be done so that the thieves are caught.
C Ward officer S Yedve told TOI, “It is a serious matter that public property has disappeared like this. I am also asking the ward officials to file a formal police complaint.
Malhotra said that recently, expensive metal plaques installed by NMMC next to human figures in various yoga asanas have also been stolen by unidentified thieves.
RTI activist Anarjit Chauhan remarked, “Investigation officers should examine various CCTV footage, as the thieves may have used a tempo-like vehicle to carry the stolen drain cover. This may give some clue about their identity.
