Madurai: Tamil Manila Congress President G.K. Vasan Condemned the attack on Monday Tamil Nadu by fisherman Sri Lankan Navy. In a statement, the former Union Shipping Minister said that the attack took place on Saturday when fishermen Were fishing near Katchatheevu.
The fishermen from Rameswaram had gone fishing in 556 motorized boats on Saturday. The Sri Lankan Navy pelted stones at them. The fishermen hid in boats to escape the attack. Their boat was hit and damaged by a Sri Lankan Navy ship, leaving six fishermen injured and narrowly saved.
Vasan said that more than 60 boats were damaged in the attack by the Sri Lankan Navy. He alleged that the fishing nets of 25 boats were damaged and the fishermen suffered a loss of several lakhs.
According to him, the attacks on fishermen were affecting the livelihood of the coastal population as they are returning to the shores without fishing and are afraid to go fishing.
He said that the central government should get assurance from Sri Lanka that the navy of that country will not attack Indian fishermen.
