Varun Dhawan is beaming with pride and nostalgia as he gears up for the launch of his niece, Anjini Dhawan, in the upcoming comedy-drama ‘Binny and Family’. At the trailer launch event, held in the same PVR auditorium where his own debut film ‘Student of the Year’ was introduced, Varun took a moment to reflect on how Anjini has carved her own path into the film industry, despite the inevitable assumptions that come with being from a film family.
Varun candidly addressed the common scepticism surrounding star kids, acknowledging that it’s often difficult for the public to believe that someone from a film family could secure a role without connections. However, he insisted that Anjini’s journey to her debut has been entirely her own achievement. He emphasised that ‘Binny and Family’ was presented to Anjini purely on her merit, with no influence from him or their family, “My appeal to people is that if they can try and give her the same love as you gave the three of us,” he stated.
During his speech, Varun shared how he first heard about the film through friends and was initially taken aback when he wasn’t involved in the process. However, after watching the film, he was deeply moved by its narrative and Anjini’s performance. He made it clear that his father, the renowned director David Dhawan, didn’t launch him in the industry, and similarly, their family played no part in Anjini’s casting.
He explained, “No matter how much I say that she did this on her own, she has bagged the film on her own, it is difficult to believe when you are related to a film family. I am not related to Mahaveer ji; professionally we haven’t worked together. He didn’t cast her because of me or daddy. I came to know about the film through two friends, Shashank Khaitaan and Varun Gupta. They had told me that it is a good film and I was slightly offended, because I wasn’t asked if I could see the film! When I saw the film, I was moved. My father never launched me. We don’t have that tradition and he doesn’t believe in it. So, we have no hand in what she has done, so it will be wrong for me to take any credit for her success. She has genuinely done this by herself.”

Anjini’s character, Binny, is a rebellious, free-spirited schoolgirl whose world is turned upside down when her traditional grandparents move in.
