Varanasi: The Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport Varanasi will soon have an advanced primary and secondary radar system.
Airport Director Flight Lieutenant Akash Deep said the process to equip the LBSI airport with advanced primary and secondary radar systems worth about Rs 25 crore has been started with the construction of its building with a budget of Rs 4.66 crore. He said that the project would be completed in a year after which the airspace would be fully strengthened.
Airport officials said that at present the LBSI airport is equipped with a secondary radar system in the form of Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR), which has a range of 250 nautical miles. Apart from the upgraded version of the secondary radar system, the airport will also be equipped with a primary radar system that normally controls traffic within 60 nautical radius of the airport below an altitude of 25,000 feet, officials said.
The advent of advanced primary radar systems, which are installed at large airports, will not only detect and display the presence and position of aircraft in the terminal area, but will also be able to detect small objects such as drones, small aircraft and helicopters in the airspace. will help. Around airports, officials said it would also give weather and cloud information.
The airport director said the construction of the new building was started on July 26 after performing ‘bhoomi pujan’. The construction work is likely to be completed in a year after which the radar system will be installed.
