LUCKNOW: Varanasi secured the number one position in the ‘Best Ganga Town’ category for the second consecutive year in the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA)’s Swachh Bharat Survey. Overall, Uttar Pradesh improved its ranking by a notch, from seventh in 2020 to sixth this year.

While Varanasi was awarded in the category of cities with a population of more than 1 lakh, Kannauj for the second year in a row received the ‘Number One Best Ganga Town’ award among cities with a population of up to 1 lakh.
Lucknow won the award for ‘Best State Capital in Citizens Feedback’. Overall, it secured the 12th rank and retained its previous year’s ranking to become the top-tank UP city with a population of 10 lakh and above. The other seven cities of UP in the top 30 are Ghaziabad (18th), Kanpur (21st), Agra (24th), Prayagraj (26th), Meerut (27th) and Varanasi (30th).
Three of these – Ghaziabad, Kanpur and Meerut – have improved their rankings, while three others – Varanasi, Prayagraj and Agra have slipped slightly but retained their positions in the top 30. Last year, six cities from UP were in the top 30. This year the number has increased to seven.
Urban Development Minister Tandon and Additional Chief Secretary Urban Development Rajneesh Dubey have congratulated the officers and representatives of the award winning municipal bodies for their good work.
While ‘citizen response’ included public feedback and satisfaction, ‘service level progress’ included use of technology in providing services to people, water conservation and sewage treatment and ‘certification’ included assessment of open defecation free status and garbage collection. Was.

Among other award-winning UP cities, Meerut won the ‘Fastest Mover Big City’ award in the category of cities with a population of 10 lakh to 40 lakh, while Ghaziabad won the ‘Best Big City in Innovation and Best Practices’ award. same category.
In the category of cities with a population of 3 lakh to 10 lakh, Noida won the ‘Cleanest Medium City in India’ award, while in the category of population above 1 lakh, Hapur won the award for ‘Best City in Maximum Citizen Participation’ Won.
Patiali won the ‘Best City with Maximum Citizen Participation’ award in the category of cities with population less than 1 lakh. Hasanpur won the ‘Fastest Mover City’ in the 50,000 to 1 lakh population category, while Awagarh and Gajraula won the ‘Best City in Citizens Feedback’ award in their respective categories.
Meerut Cantonment won the award for ‘India’s Cleanest Cantonment’ in the category of population of 1 lakh, while Varanasi Cantonment won the same award in the category of population above 1 lakh.
In the category of ‘garbage free cities’, five cities of UP – Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Noida, Aligarh and Jhansi – Star rating given.
Although Lucknow ranked 12th, its score increased to 4,586 from 4,102 last year. Kanpur also improved their score from 3,783 to 3847 and jumped from 25th to 21st last year. Ghaziabad improved its rank by a notch from 19 last year to 18 this time, while its overall score saw a drop from 4,283 to 4,220.
The ranking released by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) on Saturday is based on a cleanliness survey conducted across the country after segregating cities and towns on the basis of their population.
In all, 4,320 urban local bodies, including cities, towns, municipalities and cantonments, were assessed in various categories. Among them, the two major categories were 372 cities/towns with a population between 1-10 lakh and 48 large cities with a population of 10 lakh or more.
The Swachh Bharat Survey 2020 had four parameters – Citizen Feedback (1,500 Marks), Certification (1,500 Marks), Direct Observation (1,500) and Service Level Progress (1,500).
However, this year, the assessment was done on three parameters – citizen feedback (1,800 points), service level progress (2,400 points) and certification (1,800 points). The total marks for the grab was 6,000.
Meerut was the star performer, jumping 14 places – from 41st rank last year to 27 this time – with a total score of 3,598, a substantial increase from last year.
At the same time, the biggest drop in the ranking among the cities of UP was recorded in Agra, which slipped from 16th rank last year to 24th this year. Agra’s net score also fell to 3,715 from last year’s 4,391.
Prayagraj also slipped six places from 20th rank last year to 26th this time. Its net score in 2020 was 4,141, which dropped to 3,613 this year.
Varanasi also slipped three places from last year’s 27th position to 30th position, while its score fell to 3,532 from 3,684 last year.
