Vanniyar Sangam gives legal notice to Suriya, Jai Bheem director, demands removal of controversial scenes

Suriya starrer Tamil film Jai Bheem seems to have been receiving praises and brickbats ever since its release on Amazon Prime Video. Vanniyar Sangam’s state president Pu Tha Arulmozhi has issued legal notices to actor-producer Suriya, his wife and co-producer Jyothika, director TJ Gyanvel and Amazon India for an unconditional apology and removal of certain scenes from the film. Termed “disrespectful” to his community. He also demanded a compensation of Rs 5 crore within seven days.

On behalf of Arul Mojhi, the legal wing of the Vanniyar Party, Pattali Makkal Katchi’s spokesperson and lawyer K Balu issued the notice, in which he claimed that there are scenes which show the Vanniyar community in a bad light in the film. Jai Bheem talks about the members of the Irular tribe who were tortured in custody and how Justice Chandru, played by Surya, fought and won the legal battle for them.

The notice mentions a scene where ‘agni kundam’ (fire emanating from a vessel) is seen printed on a calendar. Stating that ‘Agni Kundam’ symbolizes Vaniyars, he claimed that the makers deliberately kept the calendar. The notice demanded that the picture of ‘Agni Kundam’ be removed from the film.

According to Vanniyar Sangam, changing the name of the villain to Gurumurthy, resembling one of its foremost leaders, and showing his ‘Agni Kundam’ symbol is presumed to be from the community, which means members of the community. prone to doing wrong and taking illegal action.

It was earlier reported that the film is also in controversy for a scene in which a sub-inspector of police (SI) is seen beating and killing tribal youths of the Irular community. The film is based on real-life incidents that took place in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu in the 1990s and the policeman accused in the actual incident was not from the Vanniyar community. Many are now alleging that the film tries to misrepresent the Vanniyar community.
