According to the new tender issued, 30 rakes will be made in ICF and 14 each in RCF and MCF.

Sources told TOI that both the MCF and RCF will be required to prepare test lines and OHE (Overheard Equipment) for Vande Bharat trains. “Both the coach factories will be ready to manufacture Vande Bharat trains by next year. This is the time when ICF will prepare the first prototype rake of the new improved Vande Bharat train,” sources said. The train set will have to be tested with all 16 coaches, which will require a more extensive test line. “Also, the shell and construction of Vande Bharat is slightly different,” the sources said.
Vande Bharat trains run on the basis of distributed traction – so the train set does not require a locomotive to haul it. The train set allows for faster acceleration and deceleration – resulting in shorter travel times. The first two Vande Bharat trains between Delhi-Varanasi and Delhi-Katra have reduced the journey of 11-12 hours to just 8 hours.
