Varanasi: Four A pickup van carrying laborers going from Bareilly to Aurangabad in Bihar overturned near Dhafi toll plaza under Lanka police station on Wednesday, in which women were killed, while 19 people were injured.
ACP Bhelupur Praveen Kumar Singh said that the van was taking 25 men, women and children from nine families to their homes from Bareilly. The accident occurred when the driver tried to overtake the truck. According to the labourers, all of them were residents of Aurangabad district of Bihar and lived in Bareilly with their families to earn a livelihood. They had boarded the van to reach their native places on the occasion of Diwali and Chhath to celebrate the festival with their relatives. The van was passing through Dafi area on National Highway-2, when the driver lost control of the steering while trying to overtake the truck, after which the van rammed into a divider and overturned.
Hearing the cries of the injured, some passers-by and local residents rushed to the spot to rescue them. During this, the Lankan police also reached the spot. Apart from ambulances, auto rickshaws and other vehicles were used to take the injured to the trauma center of BHU.
Though Lilavati (20), Roopa (17), Anju (22) and Kaushalya (22) died on the way before the injured could reach the hospital, police said the other injured were identified as Sudama, Kiran Devi, Mamta.
