The police asked them to leave the party during the curfew, when they claimed that they were delayed due to rituals. Not satisfied with their reply, the police brought Patel and his wife Sonal, their parents and other relatives to the police station including nine people.
The police also registered offenses under sections 188 (disobedience to duty declared by public servant), 269 (negligent act) of the Indian Penal Code and various sections of the Epidemic Act.
The 24-year-old groom is a vegetable vendor and hails from Tariavad in Valsad. “A day before my wedding, the police declared night curfew in Valsad. Thus, following the new guidelines, only a few members of our family went to the marriage function. Due to delay in some rituals, we finally left the venue late, which was our fault,” Patel told TOI.
Alleging that she was slapped by a cop, she said, “The way he handled me and my family was very disturbing and disrespectful. After completing the legal process for about two hours, the police allowed us to go home with a guarantor for bail with a warning to be present before the police.
Police Inspector VD Mori of Valsad Town Police Station said, “We have registered the offense as per the law. They went out for dinner when their vehicles were stopped by the police party. The police neither arrested nor detained him. They were allowed to leave immediately after being served notices and completing the legal process.”
“The family did not inform us of any harassment by the police. From media reports, I have ordered an inquiry and a Deputy Superintendent of Police is probing the allegations.” Rajdeepsinh Zala, Superintendent of Police Valsad.
