Legends around the birth of Maharishi Valmiki

There are many legends about the birth of Maharishi Valmiki, who is said to have been born to Maharishi Kashyap and Goddess Aditi’s 9th son Varuna and his wife Charshini. The credit of writing the first verse in this area also goes to Maharishi Valmiki.

According to another legend, he was born as Ratnakar, the son of a Brahmin named Pracheta, who was once a dacoit. He killed and robbed many innocent people before meeting Narada Muni, who turned him into a good human being and a devotee of Lord Rama. After years of meditation practice, he became so calm that ants built mounds around him. As a result, he was given the title of Valmiki, which translates to “born from an ant mound”.

Valmiki learned the legend of Lord Rama from Narada Muni, and under his supervision, he wrote the story of Lord Rama in poetic lines, which gave rise to the epic Ramayana. The Ramayana has 24,000 verses and seven sargas (Kandas) including the Uttara Kanda. The Ramayana is about 480,002 words long, which is one-fourth the length of the entire text of another Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, or about four times the length of the Iliad, an older Greek epic.

On Valmiki Jayanti, members of the Valmiki sect organize a procession or parade, in which they sing devotional hymns and hymns.
