Valencia president Anil Murthy sacked after audio leak

Valencia confirmed on Monday that Anil Murthy has been sacked as president after a series of leaked audio recordings threatened a player and criticized club owner Peter Lim.

In a statement, the club said, “A change in leadership is needed to regain the trust of fans and the community and to propel Valencia CF to a position of success. With immediate effect, Anil Murthy is both President and Staff of Valencia CF.” Won’t stay.”

In the recording, published in April by the Valencian newspaper Superdeport, Murthy was heard threatening to destroy the reputation of Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler if he leaves the club on a free transfer.

Murthy was then heard in a separate recording calling Lim “an amateur”, claiming that the owner of the club was “a fan” for making sensible business decisions.

“The Board would like to clarify that the contents of the leaked conversations between Anil Murthy and various third parties are the personal views of Anil Murthy and not that of Valencia CF. Valencia CF dissociates itself from its views,” the statement read.

Murthy’s departure is the latest controversy to beset Valencia during a turbulent period for the club.

Lim’s Meriton Capital company acquired Valencia in 2014, but despite initial investment in the team and optimism among fans, Singapore’s commitment and popularity have waned in recent years.

The squad has faced a cost-cutting campaign as key players have been sold and not replaced.

In 2020, Murthy said, “Putting the mindset of winning big stadiums, big players, La Liga and the Champions League at all costs will be a repetition of the past.”

Valencia have finished ninth, 13th and ninth in La Liga in the last three seasons, with more than 10,000 fans gathering outside the Mestalla in May to protest the club’s move.

Academy director Sean Bai will “oversee football operations” as interim acting director general, Valencia confirmed. Non-executive director Khojama Kalimuddin will stand as chairman of the board of directors temporarily.

Valencia won the last of their six La Liga titles in 2004, the year they also lifted the UEFA Cup, and were Champions League runners-up in 2000 and 2001.
