More than 20 thousand infected patients were found in Mumbai for the second consecutive day on Friday. With such a large number of patients, the number of patients admitted to the hospital has also increased. As of Friday, out of 35,645 beds in government and private hospitals in the city, 6,531 beds had patient admissions. This is 18.3% of the total beds.

On Friday itself, 1394 new patients were admitted, out of which 88 patients were on oxygen support. Including these, the number of patients with oxygen support in city hospitals has increased to 2385. BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said on Thursday that 96% of the patients who are on oxygen support are those who have not received a single dose of the vaccine. In the remaining 4% of patients, most have taken a single dose of the vaccine.

Even before this, out of 1900 patients admitted to oxygen beds on Thursday, only 4% were those who have taken one or two doses of the vaccine. Most of the patients admitted on oxygen beds are between 40 and 50 years of age.

Only one death occurred every day in the city in 16 days

As on 7 January, out of the 2638 ICU beds in the city, 671 were admitted. Apart from this, out of 1407 ventilator beds, 421 were patients. It is not yet clear how many of these have taken the vaccine. According to a BMC official, in the first and second wave, the maximum number of deaths occurred in those who already had some other diseases apart from Kovid. On an average, one patient died every day in the city during the last 16 days. During the last 24 hours, 6 patients have died in the city. After this, the total number of deaths has increased to 16,394.

108% population got first dose of vaccine in Mumbai
In Mumbai, the BMC has vaccinated 108% of the population with at least one dose (the number is over 100% as it includes the temporary population). At present, there are 92 lakh people in Mumbai who are eligible for the vaccine. According to BMC data, 89% of the patients are those who have been given two doses. Since January 03 till now 9 lakh children of 15 to 18 years have been born in Mumbai.

Oxygen consumption of only 5% of production capacity in Mumbai

The BMC commissioner said that soon there may be more than one lakh active patients in Mumbai. At present, our daily consumption of oxygen is 10 tonnes and our production capacity is 200 tonnes per day. We have an additional storage of 400 tonnes of oxygen. In the third wave, we have to understand that the measure of imposition of lockdown may not be the positivity rate, but the number of patients admitted to the hospital. We are assessing the situation. A decision will be taken considering the need for oxygen and the demand for ICU beds.

81% covid beds are currently empty in mumbai
Chahal said that 81% of the city’s Covid beds are still vacant and the situation will be reviewed once the number reaches 50% in the coming days. In an interview, Chahal said, ‘Our experts of the Kovid Taskforce have told me that 40,000 cases can also come in Mumbai daily. It may or may not happen, but considering the cooperation of the citizens, we will come out of this situation comfortably.
