UCC Row: BJP leader Kapil Mishra indicated on Friday that the Modi government may make a big announcement on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on August 5. He claimed that August 5 is an important date for the Center as it has taken major decisions on this date. To support his claim, Mishra cited the date of announcement of the construction of the Ram temple and the abrogation of Article 370. His remarks came hours before the crucial press conference of the Uttarakhand UCC committee.

He tweeted, “The decision of Ram Mandir was taken on 5th August. Article 370 was removed on 5th August. Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is also coming on 5th August. Jai Shri Ram.”

Sources said the Uttarakhand panel on UCC has also stepped up its efforts and is likely to submit its report to the state government in the next few days.

A big announcement can be made by the UCC panel on Friday. The expert committee preparing the draft of UCC can hold a press conference at Uttarakhand Sadan at around 1.30 pm.

Parliamentary Panel’s move on UCC

Meanwhile, a parliamentary standing committee summoned representatives of the Law Commission and the law ministry on July 3 over the recent notice issued by the law panel to seek views of stakeholders on the issue of Uniform Civil Code.

As per the schedule of the Standing Committee on Law and Personnel, it will hear the views of the Law Panel and representatives of the Legal Affairs and Legislative Departments of the Ministry of Law on the public notice issued by the Law Commission of India on June 14, 2023. Views are being invited from various stakeholders on Uniform Civil Code under the theme ‘Review of Personal Laws’.

Till Tuesday evening, the law panel had received around 8.5 lakh responses to its public notice.
