The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for Uttarakhand with heavy to very heavy rain forecast in the state.

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh,” the IMD said in its daily weather bulletin issued on Monday morning.

The IMD also informed that the mercury has dropped in the district, especially in Pipalkoti, Ghat, Pokhari areas including district headquarters Gopeshwar. Snowfall has also occurred in the higher reaches.

In a tweet yesterday, the IMD said that as a result of interaction with low-level easterly winds, thunderstorms and heavy rain activity may occur over Uttarakhand and other states.

“Thunder and heavy rain activity over Uttarakhand, West UP and Haryana on 17th and 18th as a result of WD interaction with low-level easterly winds. Cloudy from Low-Pressure Area over Telangana towards West UP and South-East Haryana today Starting at noon,” it said.
