Uttarakhand Election 2022: Important battle between BJP and Congress; AAP, SP, BSP are also in the fray

The upcoming assembly elections to be held in early 2022 are likely to see an interesting contest between the BJP and the Congress in Uttarakhand.

This time the ruling AAP in Delhi will also contest the state elections, although it is expected that the main contest will be mainly between the BJP and the Congress.

The main electoral issues in the hill state are migration, employment, health, education and the public transport system.

On March 9, 2021, the Chief Minister of the state Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned from his post and was succeeded by Tirath Singh Rawat. Later, he had to resign from his post within a few months and now Pushkar Singh Dhami is the Chief Minister of the state.

In the 2017 assembly elections in Uttarakhand, the BJP won 56 seats, while the Congress got 11 seats.

However, despite the BJP getting a thumping majority, there were frequent changes in leadership in the state. This is the reason why BJP ruled Uttarakhand has seen three chief ministers in less than 5 years.

The Congress believes it is in a “strong position” this time, citing “instability” within the BJP. The responsibility of preparing for the assembly elections in the state and ‘winning’ this election rests in the hands of Harish Rawat and some other senior leaders.

At the same time, BJP has appointed convenor and assembly in-charge in 70 assembly constituencies. Taking an edge over all other parties in the preparations for the elections, BJP has started finalizing the candidates.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is highlighting the various ‘development works’ done by the government in the last five years as part of the campaign. For this, the Dhami government will take out ‘Vikas Rath’ in all the districts of the state. Apart from this, to promote the policies, development works and schemes of the state government, the party will also take the help of street plays and LED screens at 300 places in the state.

At the same time, AAP says that this time it will contest all 70 seats.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has promised that if AAP comes to power, 300 units of electricity will be given free to every household in the state. It (AAP) is also preparing to contest the elections with full force.

Like AAP earlier also there was Uttarakhand Kranti Dal which is contesting as third force apart from Congress and BJP. The Uttarakhand Kranti Dal was the party that started the movement for a separate hill state, but still could not become an alternative to the Congress or the BJP.

Similarly, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) also emerged successful in the seats, but as a third party, it could not achieve much in the politics of the state. This time too, the BSP has announced to contest the assembly elections on all 70 seats of Uttarakhand.

Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has also announced to contest all the seats in the state. But here the road is more difficult for the SP. Akhilesh Yadav-led SP had won the Haridwar Lok Sabha seat in 2004, but since then the party has not got any seat.
