Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat sends resignation to JP Nadda months after taking oath

New Delhi: In an unprecedented development, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat has sent his resignation from the top post less than six months after taking oath, sources have told ABP News.

As per reports, Rawat has sent his resignation to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president JP Nadda.

Rawat, in his letter to the BJP president, has referred to the Representation of the People Act 191 and said that he cannot be re-elected to lead the Uttarakhand assembly in the next six months.

As per the Constitution, Rawat, an MP from Pauri Garhwal, who was sworn in as CM on March 10, has to become a member of the state assembly before September 10 to continue in office.

Rawant, in his letter to the BJP chief, underlined that he would not be able to become an MLA in the coming two months and that is the reason he sought his resignation.

The development comes amid speculation of a change of leadership in Uttarakhand and the BJP may elect a new leader as chief minister, given the possibility that the Election Commission may not hold a bypoll to enable Rawat’s election to the state assembly.

Earlier in the day, Singh Rawat had indicated that the BJP would take a decision on the basis of the Election Commission’s decision to hold bypolls in the state.

As per the rules of the assembly, Singh needs to be elected as an MLA in the next two months to continue as the CM of Uttarakhand, which he took after Trivendra Singh Rawat was ousted from power by the BJP leadership.

The term of the Uttarakhand Assembly is about to end in less than a year and thus, experts are of the view that the Election Commission cannot order by-polls for vacant seats in the state.

Meanwhile, speculation about change of power in the state intensified after Rawat was called to Delhi where he met top BJP leaders including party president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
