Prayagraj: Giving a potential challenge to chemical based insecticides, a Manikpur (Chitrakoot) based gaushala a natural and developed organic pesticide From sheer bovine blessing, or cow urine, cow dung, neem leaves and jaggery. Called “Gau Amrutam”, it is set to hit the markets across UP this week.
Volunteers associated with cow protection department Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) are mass producing Gau Amrutam To maintain soil fertility and purity in many Gaushalas in Bundelkhand, Kashi and many other regions.
Abhishek Bajpai, convener of Gau Amrutam and mass production at Abhay Gaushala, Manikpur, told TOI that, “For producing 200 liters of natural insecticide (gau-amrutam), we use 20 liters of gaumutra (cow urine), five are doing. kg cow dung, 5 kg neem leaves and five kg jaggery (jaggery).
He further added, “This Gau Amrutam not only helps in increasing the productivity of the soil but also enhances the growth of the plant”. The product also has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. He also claimed that it would not harm the earthworms which increase the productivity of Gau Amrit Mitti.
“Often chemical based insecticides not only kill earthworms but also prove to be harmful to humans due to the chemical substances present in them,” Bajpai said. “This cow urine and dung based insecticide will also increase the productivity of the soil,” he said.
VHP based gaushalas have worked on production of insecticides with the help of cow urine, cow dung and neem, followed by production of disinfectant (cow urine based phenyl) and cow dung based cakes (gomaykhand for worship and yagya purposes).
Interestingly, the Gau Raksha wing of the VHP also interacted with thousands of farmers at village and block level, held meetings across the state and apprised them about the effectiveness and value of “Gau Amrutam”.
After receiving the feedback, the gaushalas plan to open outlets in several parts of the state to sell natural and organic pesticides. “We also plan to promote ‘Gau Amrutam’ in the Magh Mela to be held on the banks of the Ganges in January next year,” Rakesh Shukla said.
