Uttar Pradesh elections: A day before voting, Rita Joshi’s son calls on Akhilesh Yadav, triggers speculations | Lucknow News – Times of India

LUCKNOW: Mayank Joshi, the son of BJP MP Rita Bahuguna Joshi, called on Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday at the party headquarters. The meeting once again triggered speculations of Mayank, who was seeking BJP ticket from Lucknow Cantt, siding with the SP.
The meeting that took place a day before the polling for the fourth phase was scheduled, was described as a courtesy call by Akhilesh Yadav in his tweet in which he released a photograph where Mayank can be seen handing over a boquet of flower to former UP CM . In the political circles, the meeting is being seen as a bid to win over Brahmin leaders who were said to be unhappy with the BJP.

Mayank’s mother Rita Bahuguna Joshi is a sitting BJP MP from Allahabad. She had won the 2017 assembly elections from Lucknow Cantt, and, later, when she became the MP, the seat fell vacant and BJP’s Suresh Tiwari became the MLA. In the run-up to the 2022 Assembly polls, Rita Bahuguna Joshi had triggered a controversy when she announced that she was willing to resign as a member of parliament if BJP was ready to field Mayank from Lucknow Cantt. She had claimed that Mayank deserved the ticket as he had been working very hard in the constituency. The BJP however refused to relent and named law minister Brajesh Pathak as the party candidate from Lucknow Cantonment. Thereafter there were reports that her son may join SP just days before the polls – something that Rita Bahuguna had vehmently denied then.
Interestingly, SP patriarch Mulayam Singh yadav’s younger daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav was also reportedly keen on contesting the 2022 assembly polls from Cantonment seat but had later joined the BJP. Polling for Lucknow Cantt assembly seat will be held on Wednesday.
