There is a possibility of a hung assembly in Uttar Pradesh in the 2022 elections, Congress’ special observer in-charge Bhupesh Baghel told News18.com in the state. The leader vested his confidence in the Congress party to be the kingmaker in the event of a hung assembly, indicating that it could allow the Samajwadi Party to come to power in that scenario.
“I think voters will show Yogi Adityanath the exit gate. There is a possibility of a hung assembly and the Congress may become the kingmaker.
Yogi’s BJP, Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party and Congress, mainly led by Priyanka Gandhi in the state, are the focus of this year’s Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Aam Aadmi Party is also in the fray in this year’s UP Assembly elections.
When asked whether the Congress would win the UP assembly elections this time, Baghel said the result would surprise everyone.
“This time the first big thing is that the Congress party is contesting 400 seats this year since 1996. The biggest victory of Congress in these elections is that we left the agenda of caste and religion to other parties and talked of development and welfare, stray cattle, women’s safety. The result will surprise everyone,” he said.
“The reason for this is because the workers have worked really hard on the ground. I have also seen that a large number of youth and women are coming to Congress rallies. This shows that the issues we have raised are real issues of the people.”
Criticizing Modi, Baghel said the schemes he talked about during election rallies were schemes launched by the UPA government. “Free ration, Right to Education, MGNREGA I are the schemes of UPA. Tell me what he has presented after coming to power. Are they seeking votes for demonetisation and privatization?”
The Congress leader also said that caste and religion are not creating a wave in this year’s UP Assembly elections as the party and Priyanka Gandhi have put forward development, women’s upliftment and welfare as key issues.
