Mobile, Ala. ,Nothing) – this was a scene of World War II – Saturday afternoon – on the USS Alabama.
The love of preserving the past – The living history of the battleship prompts the crew to implement a re-enactment of the sacrifice of the greatest generation.
“We’re trying to pass on their stories – the stories they told us. My father’s generation told me stories. And we’re trying to pass them on and be a part of our naval heritage and our history. Small portions are preserved, which are slowly disappearing from view,” said Captain Peter Cash of the battleship Alabama Living History Crew.
A crew of about 50 volunteers participated in the show – aircraft, guns, and casualties.
“I started doing Living History Crew around 2016 – 2017,” said Battleship Living History crew member Nathan Howard.
Howard is also an active army – and will tell you this is as real as it gets.
“I encourage people to come out and watch it mainly because it’s a Living History crew — you get to interact with the sailors, talk to the sailors, and watch,” Howard explained.
Ben Erickson and his wife had a front row seat. While the couple has an annual membership pass to the park – this is their first reunion.
“I’ve never seen a ship dive-bomb ship like this. I don’t know if anywhere else in the world you’re going to be able to see a re-enactment of them as they were and as they were. Great,” Erikson said. said.
A unique perspective aboard the “Mighty A” – uncovering the historic shipwreck that calls Port City home.
“Again, Alabama is unique in that regard because it only served a few years after WWII and after that essentially all of its machinery was moth-balled intact. So we actually have more original equipment – machine tools ” The machines in the shop or the equipment in the tool room are comparable to most other museum ships. So we are extremely lucky,” Cash explained.
The Living History crew of the USS Alabama conducts its re-evaluation every two months.
