CricketNext has learned that USA has been axed as the co-host of the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup.

USA stripped of co-hosting rights for 2024 edition of T20 World Cup with West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

News18 CricketNext sent an email to ICC asking if USA is still the host. The story will be updated once the ICC responds.

An ICC release in April 2022 confirmed the direct qualification of the United States and the West Indies for the 2024 T20 World Cup as co-hosts. It was a historic moment for the United States, which despite being the first country to receive ICC associate member status decades ago, is still trying to establish a cricketing culture in its sporting ecosystem.

“The qualification pathway for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 has been confirmed with 12 teams automatically qualifying for the event. The top eight teams from the 2022 event will join the two host members, the West Indies and the USA, as well as the next highest ranked teams in the MRF ICC Men’s T20 rankings table as of 14 November 2022. If West Indies finish in the top eight in Australia later this year, three teams will advance based on rankings and if outside the top eight two teams qualify from the rankings table,” the ICC release had said then.

However, to date, long before the rights were awarded, there is no clarity on who is actually running the affairs of USA Cricket.

For the longest time now, either the ICC has banned the US Cricket Federation in the past or is helpless to allow another elected body to retain it. The ICC continues to conduct its affairs in the US by coordinating directly with its own staff/consultants based outside the country. so much so that even the American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), the commercial arm that is bringing together T20 league cricket in the US, currently only deals directly with the USA.

CricketNext recently sent a questionnaire to the ICC but there was no official response. ICC sources said: “Martin Snedden, Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Skerritt were part of the board sub-committee that was charged with reviewing all 28 proposals submitted with the ICC management before making recommendations to the board. Process As part of this, the ICC wanted to take the World Cup to new territories and well-established markets to help meet the overarching strategic objective of growing the game. All bids submitted comprehensive details as part of the process. be provided”.

During the same conversation, ICC sources confirmed that West Indies is now the “sole” host for the 2024 WC.

“For jointly organized World Cups we often contract with the Full Member (FM) as host who is solely responsible for the delivery of the event. To ensure the successful staging of World Cup matches in other countries For this the FM will have a staging agreement with the respective members. In this case, Cricket West Indies has been contracted as the World Cup host,” ICC sources said.

Early last year, the owners of MLC announced big plans for cricket infrastructure in the country, with eight venues being built or renovated. However, Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida is the only ICC ODI-recognised venue in the country to date and has successfully hosted some international fixtures. The rest of the places are far from ready.

Most recently, the venue hosted the last two T20Is between India and West Indies in August 2022.

“What I cannot understand is why the ICC is bent on “developing” a sport in a country that is the leading first world nation on the planet and can fend for itself? On top of that , U.S. is neither an elected body nor does it have a first class civilized culture. So what is the rush to have the World Cup there? Why doesn’t the ICC put as much emphasis on the development of cricket in Nepal or any African country Might actually follow and play the game? Sources following these developments say ICC should be asked to explain its “love” for the US.

It can also now be confirmed that Ricky Skerritt, who played a role in getting the United States named as co-hosts for the 2024 T20 World Cup, will now be replaced on the ICC Nomination Committee by Oman’s Pankaj Khimji. , who is also a member. Associate Nations Directors in the Governing Body.
