US investigating deaths at plane takeoff in Kabul

WASHINGTON (AP) The US Air Force said its Office of Special Investigations is reviewing an incident at Kabul airport on Monday that killed several people, when hundreds of Afghan civilians desperate to leave the country rammed a C-17 cargo. The plane was blown up. was trying to take off. The Air Force did not say how many people died. It said human remains were found in the wheel well of the plane after it landed at Al-Udeed Air Base in the Gulf state of Qatar.

Videos of the incident, which included pictures of people falling off the plane, were widely shared on social media. The images captured the initial chaos of a US-directed evacuation following the Taliban’s takeover of the country. The Air Force said the C-17 Globemaster III had landed at Kabul airport to deliver equipment for the evacuation effort.

Before the crew could unload the cargo, the plane was surrounded by hundreds of Afghan civilians who violated the security perimeter. As the security situation was deteriorating, the crew decided to take off. (AP).
