US condemns troops for apparent expulsion of Guinean president

The United States on Sunday condemned incidents in Guinea’s capital Conakry, where special forces soldiers appeared to oust the country’s long-serving president.

The US State Department said in a statement that violence and any unconstitutional measures would only destroy Guinea’s prospects for peace, stability and prosperity.

“The United States condemns today’s events in Conakry,” the statement said. “These actions may limit the ability of the United States and Guinea’s other international partners to support the country as it advances toward national unity and a brighter future for the people of Guinea.”
