US charges two Russians in hack of Mt. Gox crypto exchange

The United States has charged two Russian citizens with hacking collapsed cryptocurrency exchange Mt Gox and operating illegal crypto exchange BTC-e, the Justice Department said on Friday.

Alexey Bilychenko, 43, and Aleksandr Werner, 29, were charged with conspiring to launder approximately 647,000 bitcoins from their hack of Mt. Gox, which wiped out half a billion dollars worth of the cryptocurrency in 2014, the department said in a statement. Collapsed after losing.

The Justice Department said Bilychenko was also charged with conspiring with another individual to operate BTC-e from 2011 to 2017.
