Alleging that the police had damaged several tazias and misbehaved with their makers, hundreds of Shia sectarians from Bhadi Khas and adjoining areas protested overnight at Shahganj police station and observed Muharram till Saturday morning.
Jaunpur District Magistrate Manish Verma and SP Ajay Sahni took stock of the area on Saturday.
Dr Sanjay Kumar, ASP (city) of Jaunpur said that in view of the ban on taking out Tazia processions during Muharram this year, in every police station, the people of the Muslim community were asked not to make Tazia.
The ASP said that on receiving information that some tajiya makers were making tajiya in areas falling under Shahganj police station limits, a police team went to his house on Friday evening and asked him to avoid it.
Angered by this, members of the community started alleging that the police had caused damage to Tajia, the ASP said.
Locals alleged that a sub-inspector along with some police raided the premises of Subban Khan and damaged several tazias and later reached Intejar Khan’s house, where policemen misbehaved with him and found tazias at his house. locked in a room.
Within minutes, a large number of people from Saraiya, Paschim Kauria, Nai Aadi and Baragaon area gathered at Shahganj police station and staged a sit-in protest. Women of the society also participated in the dharna.
Seeing the seriousness of the matter, SDM Rajesh Verma and CO Ankit Kumar also reached the spot and tried to control the situation.
However, the protesters remained adamant on their demand to suspend the SI and the police reached the locations of the tazia makers. The situation was brought under control after long talks with the community leaders.
