The Uttar Pradesh government, which has decided to open schools for physical classes, said on Thursday that attendance of students will not be mandatory and schools may close again if the COVID situation worsens. Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma gave this to the State Legislative Council while answering a question of Dhruv Kumar Tripathi, a member of the Teachers’ Constituency.

“In basic education, attendance is not mandatory. We have not made attendance compulsory even for classes 9 to 12.” Parents, teachers and political organizations have also said that offline education should be started, even if it is for a short duration, he said.

In UP, the current environment is safe enough, but if there is any indication of any concern (with respect to Covid), we may even shut down the schools,” he said. Tripathi also asked Health Minister Jai Pratap Singh whether there was any arrangement for vaccination of teachers and students below 18 years of age.

In a supplementary question, SP member Shatrudra Prakash asked the minister whether it was safe for young children to go to school without vaccination. The minister replied that the vaccine is not yet available for children under the age of 18, but is expected to be available by September.

He said that once the vaccine is available, a campaign will be launched to vaccinate the children. The state government has opened schools for classes 9 to 12 from 16 August. Classes 6 to 8 will open from August 23 and for classes I to V from September 1.
