A 30-year-old man died hours after his house was raided here for selling liquor, while his family members alleged that he was killed due to police excesses and protested against them throughout the night.

An FIR has been registered against 10 policemen on the complaint of the wife of the deceased Gautam alias Sena, an official said.

Late on Friday night, the team of Merapur police station raided the houses of some people who they suspected were liquor sellers in Brahmpuri village.

“The police team recovered spurious liquor from some houses, which were destroyed, and the team returned. Around 1:30 pm, the death of Gautam alias Sena was reported on Dial-112. It was alleged That his death led to police thrashing,” said Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashok Kumar Meena.

The SP said, ‘We have received a complaint about the matter from the relatives of the deceased.

Gautam’s family members staged a sit-in protest against the police throughout the night. They demanded the arrest of the policemen and compensation. Senior police officials reached the spot on Saturday morning and managed to take the body for post-mortem. However, the report was “inconclusive” and hence its viscera has been preserved, he said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Ajay Pratap told PTI, “An FIR has been registered against 10 police personnel on the basis of a police complaint lodged by the wife of the deceased. Out of these, four accused are named policemen while others are unknown. The investigation is going on.”

The family cremated the body late Saturday night in the presence of the police.
