The deceased have been identified as 30-year-old Brijesh Tripathi of Balrampur and 33-year-old Narendra Kumar of Sitapur. The injured were admitted to Barabanki District Hospital.
Police said that 30 passengers were on board the bus. At around 2 pm, the bus driver tried to overtake a small vehicle on the Gonda-Barabanki highway. However, the driver lost control of the steering as the bus was speeding up and the vehicle overturned and fell into a 15-feet deep gorge.
Passers-by and locals rushed to rescue the passengers and informed the police.
Barabanki Superintendent of Police Anurag Vats said bodies of two people were retrieved from the damaged bus. Some passengers with minor injuries were given first aid and sent home in other vehicles, he said.
“An FIR is being registered and we are looking into every aspect while UPSRTC will check the fitness of the bus,” the SP said.
Aman Gupta, 27, and his wife Shweta, 23, and son Vasu 2, were also injured. He told TOI: “There was a sudden jolt. Vasu was thrown on the floor of the bus while I too fell on the floor, while my wife’s head was knocked unconscious after hitting the front seat,” he said.
