A government notification states that ‘sacrifice’ of animals in public places will be banned.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday banned the sacrifice of cows and camels on the occasion of Bakrid. Apart from this, the gathering of more than 50 people in one place has also been banned. Bakrid or Eid al-Adha is on Tuesday, July 21. A government notification states that ‘sacrifice’ of animals in public places will be banned.

Earlier, the annual Kanwar Yatra was canceled in view of the COVID-19 situation in Uttar Pradesh. The organizers of the trip announced their decision to cancel the annual event this year as well in view of the threat of a third wave of the pandemic.

A government spokesperson said, “On the request of the UP government, the Kanwar Sanghas have decided to cancel the Kanwar Yatra in UP.”

The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to tell by July 19 whether it would reconsider its decision to organize the “symbolic” Kanwar Yatra in the state, saying the right to life is of paramount importance. The top court had said that “Uttar Pradesh government cannot be allowed to organize Kanwar Yatra in view of Kovid”.
