The Uttar Pradesh government has recommended a CBI probe into the mysterious death of Mahant Narendra Giri, president of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had recommended a probe around midnight on Wednesday.
“On the instructions of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a probe has been recommended to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) in the incident related to the tragic death of Akhara Parishad President Mahant Narendra Giri,” the state home department said in a statement. Tweet in Hindi
The development comes after the state police arrests Anand Giri, Narendra Giri’s estranged dependent and two others. It is alleged that Anand Giri was harassing a religious leader who had allegedly committed suicide. Police said a suicide note found near his body mentioned Anand Giri.
The state police had also constituted an 18-member special investigation team to probe the incident.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had earlier said that “many pieces of evidence” have been collected and “the guilty will not be spared”.
Meanwhile, the police on Wednesday arrested a third person in connection with Giri’s death. Inspector Mahesh Singh, in-charge of Georgetown police station, confirmed the arrest of Sandeep Tiwari, but refused to divulge the time and place of his arrest.
Earlier on Wednesday, two disciples of the saint, Anand Giri and Aadhya Prasad Tiwari, were produced in a local court, from where they were sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
The saint, who was the president of India’s largest organization of sadhus, was found hanging on Monday by his disciples at Baghambri Math in Allahabad.
