Changes in the new policy include allowing private universities to start off-campus centres.
The BJP government has made two other changes in the Uttar Pradesh Private Universities Act-2019.
The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday amended the Private Universities Act, 2017, allowing private universities to open off-campus centres.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, who also holds the education department, made the announcement and told the media that private universities can now operate off-campus centers as per the new Uttar Pradesh Private Universities Act-2019.
“The off-campus centers will work as a constituent unit of the private universities. However, private universities will not have the right to grant affiliation to off-campus centres,” Sharma said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that three important changes have been made in the Uttar Pradesh Private Universities Act 2019. Changes in the new policy include allowing private universities to start off-campus centres. According to the second amendment, if a private university has a piece of land, then there is a provision to grant permission to establish a private university in the state. The third amendment is related to the making of rules and regulations by the Executive Council under the Private Universities Act-2019.
With the new policy, private universities will no longer need the approval of the state government to get autonomous status. The Private Universities Act 2019 empowers the executive council of the university to ratify the first statute.
The Deputy Chief Minister further said that with the introduction of the new education policy, more private players will come in the field of education in the state. “We are confident that the education level of the state will improve as now private players can open off-campus centers and students of the state can now study in the off-campus centers of their districts,” Sharma said.
