UP elections: Congress candidate from Bareilly Cantt joins SP, will contest from the same seat

Days after Congress named her its candidate from Bareilly Cantt assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh, Supriya Aaron on Saturday joined the Samajwadi Party, which fielded her from the same constituency. Former Bareilly Mayor Supriya Aaron joined the Samajwadi Party along with her husband and former Congress MP Praveen Singh Aaron.

SP president Akhilesh Yadav announced his candidature from the same seat, replacing Rajesh Agrawal, who was earlier declared the SP candidate. Yadav, at a press conference, welcomed Aarons joining the party and expressed confidence that he would further strengthen the organisation.

Journalist-turned-politician Supriya Aaron was named in the first list of Congress candidates announced by party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on January 13. She was among 50 women candidates out of a total of 125 announced that day, in line with the party’s promise. In the upcoming assembly elections, 40 per cent women have been fielded under the campaign ‘I am a girl, I can fight’.

He contested from the same seat in 2012 on a Congress ticket. She had recently courted controversy over her remarks when a stampede-like situation broke out during a marathon for girls organized by the Congress in Bareilly, resulting in injuries to three girls.

“People had gone on Vaishno Devi pilgrimage (New Year’s Day), what happened there? What would you call it? It is the human tendency to run ahead of (others). Here the girls are studying in schools and a little ‘bhaag yatra’ took place, drawing a parallel to the stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu that killed 12 people. When asked about some people from Congress journalists covering the marathon, he had also called the media persons as Congress supporters.

He said, ‘My request to the media is that if anyone has felt bad (about anything), then I apologize on behalf of the party. Nothing like this happened. I know you are a ‘Congress’ (Congress supporter) from within all of you.”

SP candidate from Nawabganj seat of Bareilly, former minister Bhagwat Saran Gangwar said that now the victory of Supriya Aaron from Bareilly Cantt seat is certain. “Vaish community was compulsively voting for BJP but now Supriya will go ahead. 40 percent Muslims of Bareilly will vote for Samajwadi Party candidates.

In 2006, Supriya Aaron contested the Mayor’s election in Bareilly on a Congress ticket and won. Her husband Praveen Singh Aaron had won the Lok Sabha elections in 2009 by defeating veteran BJP leader Santosh Kumar Gangwar on a Congress ticket. BJP has fielded Sanjeev Agarwal from Bareilly Cantt seat. Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases from February 10 to March 7 and the results will be declared on March 10.
