UP elections: behind bars with SP’s Kairana candidate and MLA Naheed Hasan, sister Iqra involved in electoral battle

In Uttar Pradesh’s Kairana assembly elections, SP candidate Nahid Hasan has been in the fray with the BJP, his sister Iqra has now jumped into the fray. Iqra Hassan filed her nomination as an independent contestant on Friday, the last day to do so for the first round of seven-phase elections on February 10.

“I don’t trust this government. They can go to any extent to stop my brother and my family. As a precaution, I have decided to file my papers,” Iqra told CNN-News18 in an exclusive interview.

The 28-year-old has recently returned from London after completing her master’s degree. Ever since she was arrested under the Goondas Act a few days before the elections, she has been campaigning for her brother Naheed. Tabassum Hasan, mother of former MP from Kairana Iqra, has also been made an accused under the Act. The Hasan family has been at the center of the BJP’s “gundraj” (rule of goons) narrative against the Samajwadi Party.

BJP allegation

On Friday, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Shalabh Mani Tripathi tweeted a video of Naheed Hasan challenging the orders of the local police.

The BJP has alleged that this “goondaraj” led to a Hindu exodus from Kairana, a charge which Iqra Hasan denies. “There was no exodus and there is not. Hukum Singh ji (former BJP MP from Kairana) had also withdrawn the allegation,” Iqra told News18. Asked if migration will be an issue in this election, the 28-year-old said, “Kath ki handi baar baar nahi chadhai caste (people cannot be fooled again and again).”
