UP Election 2022: Third minister left Yogi cabinet, OBC leader Dharam Singh Saini likely to join SP

The Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh suffered another setback on Thursday when a third minister in the state cabinet quit the BJP. Backward caste leader Dharam Singh Saini, who had earlier denied that he was leaving the party, is likely to join the Samajwadi Party.

Saini is the third cabinet minister and has been out of the BJP in three days with less than a month to go in the assembly elections. Former chief minister and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav posted a picture of himself with Saini on Twitter, indicating that the OBC leader may go there, but no confirmation is available yet. Yadav had done the same to OBC leaders Swami Prasad Maurya and Dara Singh Chouhan, when they resigned from the Yogi cabinet on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

Welcoming Saini to the SP fold, Yadav tweeted in Hindi: “Our positive and progressive politics has got more enthusiasm and strength with the arrival of Dr Dharam Singh Saini ji, another warrior of social justice. Hearty congratulations and welcome to him in SP.”

Yadav also used the word ‘Mela Hobe’ at the end of his tweet, turning to TMC’s popular ‘Khela Hobe’ slogan during the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Saini has been a four-time MLA from Nakud in Saharanpur district and is considered close to Maurya. His resignation letter, circulated on social media addressed to Governor Anandiben Patel, states that he is giving up on the continued neglect of the aspirations of Dalits, backwards, farmers, educated unemployed and small and medium scale traders, who have given the BJP a massive majority. Gave. In the 2017 assembly elections.

Saini claimed in his letter that the representatives of Dalits and Backward were being neglected. Maurya and Chouhan had also made similar allegations on leaving the BJP.

However, there is no information on whether the Raj Bhavan or even the BJP has accepted the resignations.

Earlier in the day, BJP MLA from Shikohabad Mukesh Verma also resigned from the primary membership of the party. He cited the UP government’s “lack of respect” for backward classes and Dalits as the reason behind his decision. Verma, who is expected to join the SP, said he would continue to “fight for justice” under Maurya.

Avtar Singh Bhadana, Brijesh Kumar Prajapati, Roshan Lal Verma, Bhagwati Sagar and Vinay Shakya are the other five leaders who quit the BJP in the last 36 hours. Polling in UP will be held in seven phases from February 10 to March 7. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
