  • What should I follow:

Uttar Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker Nitin Agarwal, Samajwadi Party MLA who was elected to the post with the support of the BJP, quit on Wednesday and resigned from the party.

The SP MLA from Hardoi Sadar assembly seat said that he has also given up the post of MLA and Deputy Speaker of the House.

“I have sent my resignation from SP to its national president Akhilesh Yadav. I have also resigned from the membership of the assembly and as its deputy speaker,” Nitin Agarwal told reporters here.

Agarwal, who was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly with the support of the BJP, had not formally joined the party and was technically still an SP MLA. Agarwal, who had earlier shared the stage with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during BJP’s Jan Vishwas rally, is likely to contest the assembly elections from his Hardoi Sadar seat on a BJP ticket.

Political observers say that his resignation is a mere formality as he was already supporting the BJP.
