Ram Shankar Das, a priest at the Narasimha temple, live-streamed the suicide on Facebook, alleging that harassment by the police forced him to take the extreme step

A 28-year-old temple priest allegedly ended his life by hanging himself here, police said.

Ram Shankar Das, a priest at the Narasimha temple, live-streamed the suicide on Facebook, alleging that harassment by the police forced him to take the extreme step.

A few days ago, the police had registered a case against Ram Shankar Das in connection with the disappearance of Mahant Ram Sharan Das, an elder of the temple. Ram Sharan Das (80) has been missing since January this year.

The body of Ram Shankar Das (28) was found hanging in his room in the temple premises on Monday afternoon, police said.

In the live video, Ram Shankar Das made serious allegations against Raiganj police outpost in-charge and a constable posted under his security.

Manoj Sharma, SHO of Kotwali police station, said, “Priest Ram Shankar Das was a drug addict and committed suicide after getting drunk. The allegations he has leveled against the police are completely false.

When the priest did not show up for two days, the police opened the door of his room and saw that he had hanged himself by making a noose out of his cloth. Sharma said that prima facie it seems to be a case of suicide.

He said that investigation has been started and all aspects of the case are being probed.
