The Uttar Pradesh ATS on Thursday got a 10-day remand of Islamic scholar Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui, who was arrested for running a “conversion syndicate”. Siddiqui was arrested on Tuesday by the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) for illegally converting people to Islam. ADG (law and order) Prashant Kumar said Siddiqui was produced in a court on Wednesday and the ATS had sought 10-day custody to probe the matter.

The Special Additional District and Sessions Court (NIA/ATS) took the custody after going through the evidence produced by the prosecution, the official said. The remand period will start from September 24 at 10 am.

He said Maulana Siddiqui would be questioned to get more details about his relationship. Siddiqui, a well-known Islamic scholar from Meerut, was arrested three months after the ATS arrested Mufti Qazi Jahangir Alam Qasmi and Mohammad Umar Gautam, residents of Delhi’s Jamia Nagar.

According to officials, Qasmi and Gautam were running the Islamic Dawa Kendra, which was allegedly working on ISI funding to convert deaf students to Islam. Kumar said the ATS has so far arrested 10 people in connection with the conversion racket.

According to officials, those arrested were booked under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversions of Religion Act, 2020 and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
