AMU Proctor Professor Mohammad Wasim Ali has denied any negligence in Saturday’s assault and said that the matter has been blown out of proportion.

He said the incident started when a Kashmiri student objected to the noise of a badminton game being played just outside his room.

On Sunday evening, a group of Kashmiri students protested at Shatabdi Gate alleging inaction on Saturday’s incident.

The protesters also blocked the traffic by closing the Shatabdi Gate. However, due to the shutdown, another scuffle broke out near Shatabdi Gate between Kashmiri students and students from eastern UP.

Jibran told the media on Wednesday that some “hooligans” brandishing firearms had tried to disrupt his Sunday protest.

Meanwhile, Kashmiri students have drawn the attention of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, local BJP MP Satish Gautam and AMU Registrar towards Saturday’s incident. On Monday, the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association (JKSA) wrote a letter to Shah urging him to order a time-bound inquiry into certain incidents of “intimidation and harassment of Kashmiri students” at the AMU during the last few months.

The letter alleged that Kashmiri students have become targets of “hostile elements” on the AMU campus, creating an atmosphere of “fear” among over 1,400 students of the Union Territory.

BJP MP Gautam on Wednesday expressed concern over some recent incidents which have created a feeling of insecurity among Kashmiri students studying in AMU.

Gautam told reporters that a delegation of JKSA had met him a day earlier regarding Saturday’s incident.

Gautam said that he spoke to senior officials of the AMU and the district and asked them to take strict punitive action against elements responsible for such acts.

The students of Jammu and Kashmir had also met the AMU registrar on Tuesday regarding this issue.

JKSA national convenor Nasir Khuehami, who was part of the delegation that met the local MP, said on Tuesday that a Kashmiri student was seriously injured in an attack inside a hostel last November, but university officials allegedly failed to take strong action. action against the aggressor
