Even though the by-elections to Azamgarh and Rampur parliamentary seats are just a few days away, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav Promotion hasn’t started yet.
Azamgarh seat fell vacant after Yadav’s resignation, while Rampur seat fell vacant after Azam Khan’s resignation.
Both the leaders decided to continue as MLAs after their victory in the recent Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Voting for Azamgarh and Rampur by-elections will be held on June 23, while the counting of votes will take place on June 26. Both the seats are considered SP strongholds and retaining the seats will be a litmus test for Yadav and Khan.

Dharmendra Yadav is campaigning fiercely with a group of SP MLAs and senior leaders in Azamgarh. SP’s Rampur MLA Khan reached Azamgarh on Saturday along with his son Abdullah Azam to campaign for Dharmendra Yadav.
Interestingly, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has fielded Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali, who could dent SP’s Muslim vote bank.

In Rampur, the BSP has not fielded any candidate against SP’s Asim Raza, who was chosen by Khan.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again fielded Bhojpuri singer Dineshlal Yadav Nirahua from Azamgarh, who lost to Akhilesh Yadav in the 2019 general election by over 2.5 lakh votes. BJP has fielded Ghanshyam Lodhi from Rampur. Former SP MLC Lodhi was once considered close to Khan. In both Azamgarh and Rampur seats, the main contest is being told between BJP and SP. Congress is not contesting on both the seats.

Speaking to News18, SP spokesperson Sunil Singh Sajan, who is camping in Azamgarh, said, “We are comfortably winning both the seats. People of Azamgarh and Rampur have shown their love for SP and will vote for us once again. BJP candidate Nirhua, who lost by more than 2.5 lakh votes last time, will be defeated again. Our workers are going to all the villages. If he feels that Yadav’s presence is needed, he will definitely come.
SP’s ally Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) president Om Prakash Rajbhar are campaigning for Dharmendra Yadav.
Meanwhile, the BJP has deployed senior leaders, ministers and MLAs for the election campaign. BJP workers are going door-to-door explaining the development plans of the BJP governments at the Center and in the state.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath is expected to reach Azamgarh and Rampur soon along with both the deputy CMs.
UP BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said, “Be it Mulayam Singh Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav or now Dharmendra Yadav, SP has once again made it clear that they believe in dynasty politics and they have supported the youth and capable youth of Azamgarh.” is ignored.
