UNSC condemns attack on Afghan mosque, underlines need to bring perpetrators to justice

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has condemned the deadly attack on a Shia mosque in Afghanistan’s northern Kunduz province.

“We underline the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice,” the UNSC said in a statement on Friday (local time).

According to the statement, the members of the Security Council strongly condemned the dastardly and cowardly terrorist attack on 8 October 2021 in Kundath, Afghanistan.

“The attack, which was claimed by Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISKP) …. resulted in more than 100 people killed and injured,” it read.

The statement further said that its members expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and they wish the injured a speedy and full recovery.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. He underlined the need to hold the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice, according to the statement.

UNSC members urged all States to actively cooperate with all relevant authorities in this regard in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.

They reiterated that any act of terrorism is criminal and unjustified, regardless of their motivation, reaffirming the need for all States to fight by all means in accordance with the Charter and other obligations of the United Nations, wherever and whenever confirmed it. International law, international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security due to terrorist acts.
