Unmukt Chand signs up with Major League Cricket in USA

Former India Under-19 World Cup winning captain Umukt Chand has signed a multi-year deal with Major League of USA Cricket, and will represent the Silicon Valley Strikers for the 2021 season. The announcement comes a day after Unmukt announced that he would end his cricketing career in India but that he would continue to play elsewhere.

As per the BCCI policy, professional cricketers in India have to declare their retirement to be able to play in international leagues.

“I am delighted to take the next step in my cricketing career by being part of the long-term growth of American cricket and the beginning of Major League cricket,” Unmukt said in a statement on Saturday.

“I am excited to play for the Strikers in minor league cricket this weekend and help develop the game locally in the Bay Area, where I have already seen an impressive passion for the game of cricket,” he said. “

The Minor League Cricket Championship is a national Twenty20 cricket competition in the United States that sees the participation of 27 city-based teams from across the country. It was launched in 2021.

Over 200 matches will be held at 26 venues, featuring over 400 players.

“Minor league cricket will provide an infrastructure for cricket in the United States, giving way to major league cricket and the United States national team for the best players in the country,” the MLC said on its website.

The 28-year-old Unmukt will make his debut for the Strikers against Social Lashings on Saturday.

On Friday, he announced his retirement from Indian cricket and expressed optimism for what will happen next for him professionally.

“Being an eternal optimist, I feel that the road ahead is going to take me on an exciting new journey and I can add more value to it. I feel more fulfilled as a cricketer and as a human being. And I am ready to take a leap of faith and enter a new arena and contribute my best.”
