University of Hyderabad launches online Sanskrit program with software built using Panini’s grammar

NS University of Hyderabad An online interdisciplinary Sanskrit program called Sashadhani has been launched with the help of a computer software created using 15 years of research. The platform will host various computer tools that will facilitate access to ancient Sanskrit texts and help students analyze any text in the language.

The software platform and program are the result of a collaboration between professor and computer linguist Gérard Huet, from the University’s Department of Sanskrit and France’s National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology. During the software’s designing process, the computational rigor in Panini’s grammar formulas helped Huet to design his segmenter efficiently, Huet said in a statement.

The course has already received 250 registrations from around the world “from Fiji to California”, from diverse backgrounds such as the arts, humanities, engineering and medicine. The candidates also belong to a diverse age group – from 20 to 80 years.

The four instructors who taught the course include Professor Amba Kulkarni from UOH’s Department of Sanskrit, Arjun SR from Manipal University, and Pavankumar Satluri from Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth, Kochi. Arjun is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy, Manipal University, while Satuluri is an Assistant Professor in the School of Linguistics and Literary Studies, Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth.

“On the one hand we are looking at how to leverage computer technology to overcome the language barrier, how to reduce the time it takes to learn a new language, and on the other we are looking at IGT to build these computational tools. Doing too,” says. Kulkarni, who is also the coordinator of the new curriculum, in a statement. Kulkarni has worked on Panini’s grammar from computational and natural language processing perspectives.

According to University Vice-Chancellor Basuthkar Jagadishwar Rao, this course will be a trendsetter in understanding language analysis, rigor of computation and construction of ideas using languages with the help of scientific methods. Rao said the launch of the course was a rediscovery of Panini through modern computational tools.
